Yellow Bag Sundays

November 2019 Yellow Bag Sundays

Each month on the first Sunday you’re encouraged to take home a re-usable yellow grocery bag, put some non-perishable items in it, and bring it back the next week, or soon thereafter.  In November and December our contributions go to Operation Holiday.  Operation Holiday is a mission of Humankind Ministries (formerly known as Interfaith Ministries).  Operation Holiday expects to serve over 15,000 people this year.

Morning Worship

Bus Tickets and Morning Worship: November 15

Each month Grace distributes bus tickets to people in our community.  This happens on the 15th of the month, or if the 15th is on a weekend we meet the Friday before.  Volunteers and those receiving tickets begin to gather around 6:30 am in the Grace Alcove. We offer a brief worship service at 7:30 am.  Guests are greeted with smiles, coffee, water, and a place to sit. Tickets are distributed at 7:45 am.

We can always use volunteers to help with set-up, clean-up, and ticket distribution.  Want to help?  Contact Kirk Anderson, kirk@mygpc.org or 684-5215.

November 2019 Sunday Morning Schedule

9 am Worship in the Great Room | 11 am Worship in the Sanctuary

Worship at 9 am is in the Great Room and is led musically by our band. The style is less formal than the 11 am service.  The 11 am service is in the Sanctuary and is led musically by our choirs. The style is more traditional.

Children and Youth

  • Children ages 0-2: A nursery is available all morning from 8:50 am – 12:15 pm. From 10 – 10:45 am Colissa Fry leads a Sunday School lesson for these children.
  • 3 year old – 1st Grade: 3 year olds – 1st graders meets in room B10 (in the basement) also known as the Foundation Station.
  • 2nd – 6th Grades: 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders meet in Room 206 (on the 2nd floor), also known as the Excavation Station.  6th graders join this class as mentors for the younger students.
  • Youth: 7-12th graders meet in the Youth Center (downstairs).

Adults

There are three options for adults to participate in Sunday School in November.

  • Love and Logic – Meets in Room 103: Jennifer Snook leads another Love and Logic class.  The Love and Logic philosophy can fit any relationship, and the focus of this class is on parenting.  Love and Logic helps parents raise self-confident, motivated children who are ready for the real world. This class meets November 3, 10, 17 and 24.
  • Bible Study – Meets in the Chapel (on the main floor): This Bible Study for adults studies the sermon text for the day. This class is taught by members of the congregation and staff. This is a wonderful opportunity to go deeper in scripture and to get to know fellow disciples.
  • Steamers Class – Meets in Room 209: This fall the Steamers Class explores the sermon text of the week.  Steamers is a long running class with both longtime and new members.

From the Pastor’s Desk: October 22

Dear Grace Community,

We are almost two months into our school year. This means we’re almost two months into our journey through the Bible together. This year, from September – May, we’re going through the Old and New Testaments together.  On Sunday mornings we focus on some of the big stories, and then during the week you’re invited to read scripture each day.

I know that many of you are doing this (or trying!), and I can feel the renewed energy around scripture.  A few weeks ago, one of you stopped me in the hallway to talk about scripture and the way I interpreted it in a sermon.

The person who stopped me did not agree with my interpretation, and we had a good, honest, and fun conversation about this. Neither of us was threatened. Instead, I was enlivened by the chance to dig into the word and its meaning.  What a gift to know that you are wrestling with the same scripture I am.

Hebrews 4:12 says that ‘the word of God is living and active,’ and it is. Our Presbyterian tradition says that it is best studied in community.  I give thanks for the opportunity to experience the living and active word with you.

In Christ,
Catherine
