Ash Wednesday: March 2, 2022

Ash Wednesday

Lent begins with Ash Wednesday on March 2.  We have two opportunities for Ash Wednesday worship.

  • Ashes on the Go: 7 – 8:30 am

Stop by Grace for Ashes on The Go.  We’ll have bagels and coffee to go along with prayer and the imposition of ashes. Stop by anytime between 7 and 8:30 am.  For many years we held Ashes on the Go at Watermark Books. They no longer have seating in their café, so we’re holding it at Grace this year and are excited to begin Lent this way.

  • Ash Wednesday Worship: 7 pm

We gather in the Grace Sanctuary for an Ash Wednesday worship service that includes communion and the imposition of ashes. This service is streamed through our Facebook page.

PCUSA Per Capita

pcusa

Each year Grace is financially assessed for each member of our congregation. This assessment is done by our presbytery and is called per capita. Per capita is not a tax. Nothing happens to us if we don’t give (or pay) it, but we do give it because it strengthens the Presbyterian Church. What we give helps fund our presbytery and national church.

Grace budgets for the per capita cost of each member. Some members choose to give an additional gift to cover the per capita. The per capita for 2022 is $40 per member. If you choose to give this, please designate your gift as per capita.

Reading John Through Johannine Lenses by Stan Harstine

Reading John

In January we welcomed Dr. Stan Harstine from Friends University for four weeks of Sunday School.  Dr. Harstine is a John scholar, and as we began two months of focusing on John in worship, he taught an overview of John.  The Christian Discipleship team was excited to have so many people participate in the class.

Dr. Harstine has a new book on John. There’s information here and a discount code for 30% off the book.

Full to the Brim: Lenten Exchange

This Lent we’re trying something new. Six PCUSA churches in the Wichita area are coming together for a shared theme and Lenten experience. Lent begins with Ash Wednesday on March 2 and culminates during Holy Week, the days leading to Easter, April 17.

Our theme for Lent is “Full to the Brim,” and in addition to sharing a theme we’re sharing pulpits. In an expression of our shared identity as PCUSA congregations, the pastors from the area churches exchange pulpits. Catherine preaches the first Sunday of Lent at the Derby church and the fifth Sunday of Lent at the Westwood church.  A pastor from Covenant is at Grace on the first Sunday of Lent, and the pastor from First Wichita preaches at Grace on the fifth Sunday of Lent.
