Music Ministry at Grace

Music Ministry at Grace

Dear Grace Pres Community,

We are all aware of the ways Covid-19 has affected our personal lives and the lives of many people around us. Additionally, we can see some of the ways that Covid-19 has impacted the life of our church. Other than the need for online worship, possibly the biggest change we’ve begun to process is altering the ways that we present music, specifically vocal music, for worship.

Recently, I attended a webinar hosted by the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA), National Association for Teachers of Singing (NATS), and Performing Arts Medicine Association, among others. They presented preliminary findings on the effect that singing has on the spread of Covid-19. In short, the news was pretty grim for the near-term future of singing. It appears that singing increases the number of particles distributed from one person’s airway into the air around them and increases the distance those particles can travel.  Masks do not appear to help the “singing spread”, and there seems to be no way to ensure safety while singing in a group.

So, what does this mean for Grace Presbyterian Church? Well, unfortunately it means that, for the near-term future, our choir will not meet, and we will not share in congregational singing. You will see more recorded music even as we return to in-person worship. The good news is that our section leaders and our praise band have been working diligently to record solos, hymns, and praise and worship music for us to utilize, so we still get to enjoy familiar faces and voices that we have come to expect and enjoy. This is also a wonderful time for our string players, or anyone who doesn’t use breath to produce sound, to contribute to worship. We also are working to find ways to safely present solo vocal and wind-instrument offerings, but that is not yet certain.

Obviously, this is not the way I envisioned closing my time at Grace Presbyterian and know that I grieve these circumstances with you. No one wants to enjoy singing at Grace more than I. However, hope is not lost for music in our congregation. We have a team in place who will continue to monitor the situation and help determine when we will sing again. New research is constantly being presented, and there are studies producing findings that give me real hope that this will not be as long a period of time as we feared. Singing and music are integral to us as humans and as people of God, and I am confident that we will get to continue sharing in those gifts; we simply have to adjust for the time-being.

Sincerely,

Sean Foster

Director of Music Ministries

Dear Grace Community,

I’m grateful to Sean for his attention to the music life of the church and our safety.  I’m grateful for his leadership in putting together a task force to study this more.

We announced earlier in the spring that Sean is leaving for graduate school at the end of July.  In April, the Session appointed a search team to look for a new Director of Music Ministries.  We have now put that search on hold as we seek to understand more about what music will look and sound like this fall.  I am confident and hopeful that in time we will return to robust choir, band, and congregational singing.

In Christ,

Catherine

Giving the Basics: June Yellow Bags and Volunteer Opportunities

giving the basics

This month we partner with Giving the Basics Wichita for our Yellow Bag Drive and for an in-person volunteer opportunity.

From their website:

“Giving the Basics was founded in 2011 in Kansas City on the premise that no one should go without the basic items needed to be clean and live a normal life.  Basic hygiene items such as soap, shampoo, deodorant, toilet paper, and toothpaste are essential for human dignity, self worth, and general good health. Unfortunately, these items are not covered by government assistance.  Schools and food pantries are not able to stock hygiene items in quantities to fill this need.

Giving the Basics started its first affiliate program in Wichita, Kansas in January 2019 and has grown by partnering with non-profit organizations and local schools to distribute personal care items. Giving the Basics distributes free hygiene products through a consistent monthly ordering process and works with nurses, teachers, social workers, counselors, administrators, local pantries, shelters, and other 501(c)3’s and the Wichita police department to determine how we can best serve the students in local Wichita schools and children and adults in need in the greater Wichita area.”

Grace Updates: Saturday, May 30

Dear Grace Community,

“…Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting.  They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them.  All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.”  Acts 2:2-4

You can hear this same passage, read by members of our church, in English, Spanish, and German by going here: https://vimeo.com/423617209

Sunday is Pentecost.  On this day we celebrate the outpouring of the Holy Spirit.  There is evidence of the Holy Spirit all around us, moving, breathing, washing over us.  At the same time, there is evidence of a parched world, longing for the Spirit.

More than 100,000 people in our country are dead from the Coronavirus, and I give thanks that the death rate is slowing.  I hope and pray that trend continues.  As I write this, the city of Minneapolis cleans up from a night of violence, and I struggle with those images as well as the image of a police officer kneeling on a man’s neck.

I lament the overwhelming pain in our world, and I’m grateful that in the face of this pain we continue to worship together, even if it’s online.  I hope you join us Sunday at 10 am on Facebook Live.

Let us know how you are.  Email the church staff or call us to check in and share.  We miss you and pray for you.

In Christ,
Catherine

Youth Updates May 2020

Youth Updates: May 2020

As I look at these past few months, I really see how overly-blessed we are as a church, community and nation.  Although at times, you would not recognize that from people, including myself, connected to those same entities.  But God has not abandoned us, and He is still expecting us to serve, worship, pray and be active in His world. Things are not the same. We can choose to look for the worst, or we can choose to find ways to serve God in his way and image of us. For youth ministry, God has given us much to be excited about.

One is that we will confirm five youth into God’s church: Grace Westbrook, Maya Phares, Isaac Snook, Elliott Merten and Annabelle Merten. We will also baptize and confirm two youth: Grace Stark, and Mitzi Darmstetter, who have come to accept Jesus as their Lord and Savior.  During our Sunday, May 31, online worship you get to meet them and hear them as they profess their faith in God and be a witness to the baptisms.

On June 7, Grace honors our high school graduates: Audrey Farrell, Blake Ullmann, Kennedy Drake, Gracie Shelton, and all other graduates. Those listed along with their families join our Facebook Live online worship to celebrate their achievements. In addition, our arts team made yard signs for each of them that are now on display at their houses.

Zoom has been a huge blessing. While it by no means replaces in person activities and connections, we are still able to stay connected, to see a face and check in.  Our Wednesday nights are still filled with fun, conversation, a message with God leading, and a time for prayer, which may be the most important time for all on Wednesday night. Going forward we look forward to meeting outdoors where we can enjoy what God has created for us.

We are still planning our annual IGNITE High School Mission Week.  This year, we are not traveling, but we are staying local and serving. We know that we do not have to travel miles to find God, that he is here, right now and always. So, we serve, proclaim, worship, pray and have amazing fellowship right here in our own backyard.  Look for ways that you can support this amazing week in the coming weeks.

Our INSPIRE (Middle high) youth have been joining our high school youth for Fellowship on Wednesday nights. They get their own small group time to discuss the week that was and the message that was given for that evening. Charlene Randle has done a great job of keeping in touch with these youth, and we look forward to some group summer plans.

There are still ample ways to support our youth. Summer brings some normality but also many unknowns.  Continue to pray for our youth, who are now walking an unintended path, but one that still teaches them and gives them lessons for a life to be fully lived.  Pray for our Wichita Mission week. Pray that they see God in the chaos, pray they see God where they are.

There are many ways we can look at these past few months. For me, I want to see us and the world in all its God given glory and beauty.

~Kirk Anderson, Director of Youth Ministry
