Each month on the first Sunday you’re encouraged to take home a re-usable yellow grocery bag, put some non-perishable items in it, and bring it back the next week, or soon thereafter. This month our contributions go to the Mt. Vernon Presbyterian Food Pantry. All non-perishables are welcome, but consider bringing cereal.
On Thursday, May 21, the Disciple Bible Study group met for the final time.
This group completed the intensive 34 week Disciple program. The Disciple group spent 17 weeks in the Old Testament and 17 weeks in the New Testament. While they did not read the entire Bible, they ready large portions of scripture. 17 people completed this class which was taught by Tom Bloxham and Catherine Neelly Burton.
For twenty-four hours Friday, April 17 through Saturday, April 18, our INSPIRE Middle School Youth had a mission experience. They spent Friday night at the church and Saturday serving in the community. They helped with a neighborhood clean-up, worked at the ProKansas recycling center, and cleaned up Bleckley Park. Friday night included time for games, good food and worship. Senior High youth helped lead the weekend along with Kirk Anderson, director of student ministries, and adult volunteers.
Here are some quotes from the group about what they enjoyed:
- “The Trash thing”
- “Hanging out with friends”
- “My favorite part of the day was: Helping people, seeing people smile, having fun and also being with by BFF”
- “Hanging out with my friends and helping and staying up”
- “Watching the garbage truck eat the trash”
Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. ~Romans 12:2
Since last October, we’ve been discussing with 12 amazing youth what it means to be conformed by God and not of this world through our Confirmation class. It has been both an honor and privilege for the confirmation team to work with these great youth. David McIntire, Martin Burch, Catherine Neelly Burton, Fred Heismeyer and I have had the joy of talking and discussing the work of God through the ages up to now and what it means to be a true child of God. They’ve had to explore and contemplate their faith and determine what they really believe about God and His kingdom.
The members of this year’s confirmation class are:
- Ashley Bajaj
- Haley Bean
- Makena Frazier (Zimmerman)
- Luke Hetrick
- Garrett Lancelot
- Mekonen Ney
- Ian Phares
- Alexandra Schumann
- Emma Schumann
- Noelle Schumann
- Blake Ullmann
- Wil Ullmann.
On April 20, the Confirmands go before Session, read and discuss their faith statements, and are voted on for membership. On April 26, they stand before God and you to be Confirmed as members of God’s universal church and as full members of Grace Presbyterian church, by a statement of faith. You, as their church brothers and sisters in Christ, will confirm your continued support in helping them reach their full God given potential.
Please keep these young people in your prayers as their journey is not over and in some ways is just beginning!
Vacation Bible School is June 29 – July 3 from 9 am – noon
It seems like we just took down the Christmas decorations, but nonetheless, Vacation Bible School is just around the corner. The children will enjoy a Blast to the Past as they explore biblical truths about friendship, honesty and God’s amazing love. There are a number of ways to be involved.
We are looking for someone to lead the mission tent, and we are currently putting together a team of folks to help set up our decorations. If you are interested please call Jennifer Snook at Grace on Monday, Wednesday or Friday afternoons or email her at Jennifer@mygpc.org.
If you would like to donate items for Vacation Bible School, please visit our bulletin board outside of the Great Room. Take a star indicating a needed item and bring back the item by Sunday, May 10.
