Yellow Bag Sundays

March Yellow Bag Sunday

Each month on the first Sunday you’re encouraged to take home a re-usable yellow grocery bag, put some non-perishable items in it, and bring it back the next week, or soon thereafter.  In March our contributions go to the International Rescue Committee (IRC).  The IRC works with new and long-term refugees in Wichita.  Our church refugee team partners with IRC for a variety of projects. Below is a list of items needed at the IRC:

  1. Diapers (size newborn, 3, 4, 5)
  2. Baby wipes
  3. Thermometer
  4. First-aid kit
  5. Hand soap
  6. New bed sheet sets (twin and full size)
  7. New cutting board
  8. Can opener (new or used)
  9. New shower curtain
  10. $25 Gift cards to Walmart and/or Dillons. (If you’d like to give cash or check instead, please write “Refugee Yellow Bag” in the memo line on the check).

Grace Presbyterian Church

Sunday Morning Schedule: March 2020

9 am           Worship in the Great Room

10 am         Sunday School for all ages

11 am         Worship in the Sanctuary

Worship at 9 am is in the Great Room and is led musically by our band.  The style is less formal than the 11 am service.  The 11 am service is in the Sanctuary and is led musically by our choirs.

Children and Youth

  • Children ages 0-2

A nursery is available all morning from 8:50 – 12:15. From 10 – 10:45 Colissa Fry leads a Sunday School lesson for these children.

  • 3 year old – 1st Grade

3 year old – 1st grade meets in room B10 (in the basement) also known as the ‘Foundation Station.’

  • 2nd – 6th Grades

3rd, 4th, and 5th graders meet in Room 206 (on the 2nd floor), also known as the ‘Excavation Station.’  6th graders join this class as mentors for the younger students.

  • Youth

7-12th graders meet in the Youth Center (downstairs).

Adults

There are two options for adults to participate in Sunday School in March.

  • Bible Study – Meets in the Chapel (on the main floor): This Bible Study for adults studies the sermon text for the day.  This class is taught by members of the congregation and staff.  This is a wonderful opportunity to go deeper in scripture and to get to know fellow disciples.
  • Steamers Class – Meets in Room 209: Steamers is a long running class with both longtime and new members.

From the Pastor’s Desk: February 2020

Dear Grace Community,

What do you think of when you hear the word parlor?

Do you picture women drinking hot tea?  Or do you imagine a place where you go to meetings?

As part of our Deep Roots renovations we now have sights set on the Grace Parlor.  Chris Alexander, Ben Juhnke, and Kendall Price are working with me and Martin Burch on this project.  One of the early conversations the team had was about what our parlor is used for.  This is the list I came up with:

Monthly Grace Meetings

  • GRACE Session
  • GRACE Deacons
  • GRACE Mission Distribution Team

Monthly Outside Group Meetings

  • ALS Support Group
  • Delta Kappa Gamma
  • PEO – twice a month

Occasional Grace Fellowship Events

  • Steamers
  • Windjammers

Showers (wedding, baby)

  • 2-3 a year

Wedding (bridal space)

  • 1-2 weddings a year

Gathering Space for families before funerals

  • Dependent on number of funerals in a year, lately 12-14

Funeral meals or small receptions

  • 4-6 a year

Other

  • Study groups, Sunday School, or team meetings
  • Down Syndrome Society of Wichita – 4 times a year
  • Small Congregational dinners (planned giving)

We envision a renovated parlor that works for what we use the space for.  We know that it needs to be quite flexible with room for various table configurations.  We also want it to be a comfortable space for people to sit and visit or relax.   Feel free to ask any of us questions.

In Christ,
Catherine

Jacobs Learning Ladder Blog February 2020

At the end of January we had our annual Dad’s night. This year’s theme was “Luau with Dad”. The dads and children enjoyed the escape from cold temperatures while they imagined they were on a tropical island. We had tropical music, dancing, crafts, activities, and lots of fun!

Children in Ms. Bettejo’s class prepared for the Super Bowl by making signs and Kansas City Chief’s headbands. We also celebrated Kansas’ Birthday by wearing our favorite Kansas Team gear on January 29.

Around Valentine’s Day the children exchanged valentines with their classmates, celebrated with special treats and played fun games!
