Children’s Ministry Update from Jennifer Snook – September 2015

This year several friends and staff from Grace Presbyterian Church attended the Global Leadership Summit. Any time one sits for several hours and listens to others speak about effective leadership there is a possibility that one might get inspired. Well, one did. This one, heard a brief statement that she could not seem to forget.

That statement was from Bill Hybels who said, “one day, many years into ministry, after surveying our congregation, I realized that we had neglected to focus on helping our people become self-learners, and we had failed them at offering tools that would help them teach their own children about the person and life of Jesus.”

As we begin a new season of Christian education at Grace for both adults and students I pray that we will be committed to the idea of becoming self-learning, thinking Christians who will not stand for letting our children become a statistic. Barna research shows that 32% of people between the ages of 0-14 enter into a relationship with Jesus. After age 14 the percentage drops to 6%.

Children’s ministry is so very important. I say it all the time, “what we do on Sunday morning matters.” But what we do in our personal walk with the Holy matters too. How we pass on the Christian story matters, and the good news is that we have each other. We get to draw from the experience of others and offer our own unique spin as we become better connected families who are committed to raising up well-informed followers of Jesus Christ.

I encourage you to explore the classes being offered for adults and remember that the children will be learning age leveled classes on a curriculum called “Feasting on the Word,” a class that is also being extended at the adult level. The hope in doing this kind of comprehensive teaching is that adults and children are able to learn and worship the same Scripture each week in order to foster discussion at home. Grace and peace to all of you who are raising up children in the way of the Lord.

There is something to be said about routine. We expect certain things to happen at certain times each day. For families, the start of school launches a new spin on routine. There is a sadness that accompanies the end of summer, but there is renewed, hopeful energy around the academic routine.

If your start to school promises are anything like mine, you tell yourself this year things are going to be different. You determine the routine will not rule your life. You plan to make freezer meals for months at a time. You commit to syncing the school calendar on your electronic devices so that you never miss bring your teddy bear to class day. And this year, you are going to make healthy homemade snacks from one of your Pinterest boards.

My intentions are pure. My goals are attainable, but somehow, by mid-October I find myself swimming in soccer socks and tri-fold projects. The homemade snacks are replaced with graham crackers and milk, and all I can do is pray for Thanksgiving break to arrive. Thankfully, God knows that our best intentions are still fallen and fickle. That is why celebrating the Sabbath brings perspective and even holiness into our busy lives.

After Labor Day the entire church studies the same curriculum, Feasting on the Word. Colissa Frye teaches our toddlers in the nursery, Merodee Granis teaches our pre-K through 2nd graders downstairs and Geoff Snook and Sherry Camargo teach our 3rd – 5th graders in the tower. Here’s the great news. Parents: you have the chance to join a Feasting on the Word class, too. The whole family learns the same content and maybe you will step into your own routine led by a God who loves you, pursues you and will not be without you.

Ready, Set, Rest

I am excited about celebrating our diversity as a congregation by bringing all ages together to learn about God’s call to rest.

Kids are busy, parents are busy, and perhaps some of you can echo a phrase my folks are constantly saying, “I don’t know how I ever had time to work now that I’m retired.”

We all have 24 hours in a day, and we tend to need twice that amount of time to accomplish all the things on our “to do” list. Our August Sunday School series is titled Ready, Set, Rest, and we explore together the command to keep the Sabbath and share about what life looks like at every age.

The children’s ministry department at Grace welcomes a new addition to our staff. Colissa Frye is our new director of early childhood education. She spends time with our youngest Christians in the nursery on Sunday morning. Colissa loves to sing and dance, garden, and read. She is currently looking for inspiration to complete a children’s book she’s been working on. If you have children ages 0-5, they will enjoy Colissa’s gifts of peace and creativity. Stop by the nursery and introduce yourself to Colissa and pray for the way God will choose to build up our infant and toddler ministries.

Children’s Ministry Update

By Jennifer Snook

I love everything about summer. I love the longer days and the summer dinner menus. I love the heat and the change in routine.

Grow Together Cards

Grace Kids Sunday School also enjoys a change in routine. Sunday, May 31, is the last Sunday of our official Sunday School curriculum. For the month of June, find family “Grow Together” cards on the tables at the 9 am service and in the resource slots by the office.

The home is the primary place our children receive their Christian education. The “Grow Together” cards are meant to aid parents and caregivers so they can incorporate the learning of their faith in their homes. Our family has done something like this for several years, and we select Sunday late afternoons to connect with one another and talk about God’s Word in one way or another.

I would love to hear how the “Grow Together” cards work for you and your family. Please email me your hits and misses at jennifer@mygpc.org.

Vacation Bible School (VBS) is just around the corner.

Please register online or pick up a paper registration from the main office. All those helping with VBS are encouraged to attend a training meeting scheduled for Friday, June 5, from 10 am-noon.

Student ambassadors meet their crew leaders, and we talk about how we as a team we’ll make VBS something special for the youngest Christians in our midst.

If you have not signed up to help with VBS and would like to, please come to the training meeting on Friday, June 5, in the Parlor. Three slots have been filled for our VBS decorating and tear down days. We need many hands to make this event happen so stop by the VBS bulletin board just outside the Great Room and consider signing up to help for an hour. Pizza is served at both dates since they are happening over the lunch hour.

Entz Peach Orchard Excursion

Families mark your calendars for Monday, July 13. We are carpooling from Grace to the Entz Peach Orchard in Whitewater. The orchard is about 25 minutes away, and the kids can pick as many peaches as you have room to haul. More about this special outing to come. If you don’t have young children and would like to go to the orchard, you are welcome to join us.
