Growing in Faith: Sunday Mornings in October and November

The Christian Discipleship Team invites you to the second unit of Sunday morning classes for adults this fall.  This unit begins October 16. Classes run from 10-10:45 am.  There are three adult classes to choose from.

  • Listening for God
    • Join Kathy Whepley and Ginny Vincent in this journey through four short stories. These stories are not ‘Christian’ literature, but they hold Christian themes, and the class explores this. There are books for this class. They are $10 and available for purchase in the Grace office.
  • Video Series: Philosophy, Science and the God Debate
    • Listen to Oxford professors Alister McGrath, John Lennox, and Keith Ward as they discuss a range of subjects—including science and religion, exclusivism and relativism, worldviews, and design during a 15-minute video segment, and then join in the class discussion led by Hal Welch.
  • Steamers Conversations
    • October 16 and 23 – Joyce Crane teaches on “Our Amazing Brain Part 2.”
    • October 30, November 6, 13, and 27 – Dave and Maggie McIntire Teach.
      • Lincoln, God and the Second Inaugural

In the 701 words of his Second Inaugural, Abraham Lincoln mentions God 14 times, quotes four separate verses of scripture and invokes prayer thrice. Not bad for a politician called a “heathen’ and an  ‘infidel’ in his first run for national office. This class explores Lincoln’s journey as a person of faith and analyzes the religious connotations of a speech Lincoln considered, “Better than anything I have produced.”

Yellow Bag Sundays

Yellow Bag Sundays: October 2016

Each month on the first Sunday you’re encouraged to take home a re-usable yellow grocery bag, put some non-perishable items in it, and bring it back the next week, or soon thereafter. This month our contributions go to the food pantry at Mount Vernon Presbyterian Church. Consider bringing canned meats and proteins. This is the last time our contributions go to Mount Vernon in 2016. In November and December, our donations go to Interfaith Ministries’ Operation Holiday.

Laundry Love - College Town Laundry

Laundry Love: October 9

It’s time for our monthly Laundry Love! This is when we go to College Town Laundry at 3223 E 17th St, by the WSU Campus, and pay for laundry for people. This is a mission of our evangelism team, and we’d love for you to join us. We’ll be there from 2:30 – 5:30 pm on Sunday, October 9.  Want to know more? Contact Catherine Neelly Burton in the church office, 684-5215.

Prairie Fire Marathon and Half Marathon

Prairie Fire Marathon and Bluegrass Worship: Sunday October 9

Sunday, October 9, is the Prairie Fire Marathon and Half Marathon.

For the fourth year in a row runners race past Grace starting around 8 am. We’ll be on the lawn to cheer for them as they zoom down Douglas.

Cheering, waving, and clapping for the runners is joyful, particularly when you can see the difference the encouragement makes for a person. Bring a chair or plan to stand. Our presence on the lawn is an important witness to the community.

The 9 am service worships informally on the lawn. At 11, we gather in the sanctuary for worship. Our music for the day is a bluegrass band. Don’t miss this fun Sunday!

Watermark Books at Grace: October 5

Grace is excited to host Watermark Books and author, Geraldine Brooks, on Wednesday, October 5, at 6:30 pm.  Brooks’ latest book is The Secret Chord.

She is the author of four novels including the Pulitzer Prize winning March.  Her novel, Caleb’s Crossing, won the New England Book Award for fiction and the Christianity Today Book Award.

When we host Watermark, we enjoy the opportunity to offer hospitality to the community.

Can you volunteer? We need greeters for the doors and people to help serve cookies and coffee. Contact Catherine Neelly Burton, 684-5215, to volunteer.

This event is free and open to the public, so come and bring a friend.
