9 am           Worship in the Great Room

10 am         Education, Fellowship, and Special Music

11 am        Worship in the Sanctuary

Worship at 9 am is in the Great Room and is led musically by our band. The style is less formal than the 11 am service. The 11 am service is in the Sanctuary and is led musically by our choirs. The style is more traditional.

On Sunday, December 27, we have ONE worship service at 10 am in the sanctuary and no Sunday School classes.

On Sunday, December 20, we have our annual Christmas brunch in the Great Room from 10-11 am. There is no Sunday School this day.

Here’s where you will find education and fellowship opportunities at 10 am for the first two Sundays in December.

Children ages 0-Pre-K

A nursery is available all morning from 8:50 am – 12:15 pm. From 10 – 10:45 am. Colissa Fry leads a Sunday School lesson for these children. They use the Feasting on the Word curriculum.

Kindergarten – 2nd grade meets in room B10 (in the basement). Merodee Grannis and Kendall Drake teach using the Feasting on the Word curriculum.

3rd grade – 5th grade meets in the Tower Room (on the 2nd floor). Geoff Snook and Sherry Camargo teach using the Feasting on the Word curriculum.

Youth

6-8th graders meet in the Youth Center (downstairs)

9-12th graders meet in the Youth Center (downstairs)

 Adults

There are no adult Sunday School offerings in December. All adults are invited to the special music concerts in the sanctuary.

We need your help! Every year Operation Holiday (Interfaith Ministries) serves over 12,000 people. Operation Holiday provides food, coats, and gifts for families in need.

On Saturday, December 12, we sort donations to Operation Holiday. We did this two years ago and sorted coats and thousands of canned goods. It’s a fun, active way to serve and do something good for people of all ages. Children and youth (with an adult) are welcome.

There are two shifts on December 12: 10 am – 1 pm or 1 pm – 4 pm. Call the church office to sign-up. The volunteer site is 6225 E. Kellogg (the old Davis-Moore dealership between Edgemoor and Woodlawn).

Advent and Christmas is a wonderful time for music, and we have several special offerings planned.  All of these are great opportunities to come together, and invite friends to join, in praising God and celebrating the season.  May all be to the Glory of God!

We have three Advent Concerts on Sundays during the month of December from 10:15-10:40 am in the sanctuary.  Each group also helps lead music in the 11 am worship service.

  • December 6 – Mountain Dulcimer and Fiddle, Erin Lewis and Amber Rogers
  • December 13 – Woodwind Trio
  • December 20 – Epic Brass

Donna Hetrick, our Director of Music/Organist, presents an organ recital of Advent and Christmas music on Sunday, December 6 at 3 pm.  This is in the Chapel in the Administration Building at Bethel College in N. Newton, KS.  The recital is free, and all are invited.

On Sunday, December 13, our Wind and String Ensembles combines for our 9 am worship service. They offer a variety of Christmas Carols for worship. If you’re interested in playing with us, please contact Donna Hetrick at Donna@mygpc.org.

Please bring your family to the Great Room on November 15 from 4:30-6:00 pm, to create a bundle of Jesse Tree ornaments.

Jesse Trees are a very old Christmas Tradition and first started in medieval times. They are used to help tell the story of the Bible from creation to the Christmas Story.

The name comes from Jesse who was the Father of King David. One prophecy in the bible, in the book of Isaiah, says:

1 A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse; from his roots a Branch will bear fruit.
2 The Spirit of the LORD will rest on him– the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of power, the Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD–
3 and he will delight in the fear of the LORD. He will not judge by what he sees with his eyes, or decide by what he hears with his ears;
4 but with righteousness he will judge the needy, with justice he will give decisions for the poor of the earth.
Isaiah 11:1-4 (NIV)

A branch is a sign of new life and new beginnings. Jesus was a decedent of King David, and Christians believe that Jesus is this new branch. Each day in December you read a selected passage of Scripture, and someone in your family finds the ornament with the matching symbol. You hang that ornament on your Jesse tree (usually a branch or jar full of sticks) until each ornament is found and hung on the tree.  You make 25 ornaments and receive a children’s book narrating the story of the Jesse Tree.
