Every month we encourage you to take home a reusable yellow grocery bag, fill it up, and bring it back.  Most months we ask you to bring food for the pantry at Mt. Vernon Presbyterian Church.  In July we’re asking you to bring school supplies for students in the Wichita refugee community.

Grace is again partnering with First Presbyterian, Trinity Presbyterian, the Presbytery of Southern Kansas, and the Hindu Temple in this endeavor. On August 11 from 10-3 refugee families will visit First Presbyterian to pick up supplies they need for the coming year.  Our contributions will fill the backpacks for the students.

Our goal is to fill 500 backpacks.  Each church is providing particular supplies.  The Grace supplies are listed below.  You may buy one of each item or buy in bulk and bring in multiples of the same item. All contributions are welcome! If you don’t want to shop you may give the Refugee team some money to shop for you.

  • Wide Rule Notebook Paper (packs of 150-200 sheets)
  • Binder Divider Sets
  • Blue Pens
  • Black Pens
  • Calculators
  • Rulers
  • Highlighters

The school supply drive goes all month.  Bring your supplies back to Grace by July 29.

Also, look for sign-ups and volunteer for the event on August 11!  Volunteer opportunities begin in advance of the event and start at 8 am on August 11.

It’s only four chapters long, but the book of Ruth tells quite a story. On July 8, 15, and 22, Catherine Neelly Burton preaches from Ruth in worship, and Dr. Martin Burch teaches from Ruth during Sunday School. Join Martin at 10 am in the Parlor to dig deeper into the story and to learn more about Ruth.

On Sunday, July 8, 2018, the Agape Redeemed Church of All Nations begins worshiping in the Grace Chapel.  This congregation is led by Rosemary Njorge who has been part of our congregation in the past. The congregation is comprised mostly of people from Kenya but includes and is open to people of all nations. Pastor Rosemary leads the worship services.

The congregation worships starting at 11:30 am. This means that we will not use the chapel on Sunday mornings.  Currently this church is meeting at First United Methodist and has anywhere from three-15 at worship on a given Sunday. We are honored to host them and pray for their witness.

Each month Grace distributes bus tickets to people in our community.  This happens on the 15th of the month, or if the 15th is on a weekend we meet the Friday before.  Volunteers and those receiving tickets begin to gather around 6:30 am in the Grace Alcove. Guests are greeted with smiles, coffee, water, and a place to sit. Tickets are distributed at 7:50 am.

We can always use volunteers to help with set-up, clean-up, and ticket distribution.  Want to help?  Contact Kirk Anderson, kirk@mygpc.org or 684-5215.

With leftovers from a rummage sale in 1960, First Presbyterian Church of Wichita started Economy Corner Thrift Store. Grace Presbyterian joined the operation in 1962.

Each Monday morning at Grace approximately eight to 10 volunteers price items that have been donated. Items that come from Grace are separated out when sold. Grace receives 45% of the items selling price Fifty-five percent stays with First Presbyterian to pay for utilities, building maintenance, and staff. The profits that Grace receives go to mission or special projects at Grace. In addition to working at Grace on Mondays, our volunteers staff the downtown store three days a week.

You can be part of Economy Corner by donating or by volunteering. To donate, bring items to Grace anytime the church building is open. Drop off items in the Economy Corner donation room in the Southwest corner of the basement. For more information on donations or volunteering, contact the church office, 684-5215.
