Session Minute Summaries

January 31, 2021

  • The Grace Presbyterian Session met on January 31, at 12:30 pm in the Great Room for a called meeting to examine officers. The meeting was opened and closed with prayer.
  • Examined were:
    • Elders Bronwen Burch, Laurie Haury, Carolyn Shaw, Strom Sloan, and Bill Vavra
    • Deacons: Sophia Randle, Janet Rhoads, and Anne Woolsey
  • Each newly elected officer shared their faith story with the session, and session members were invited to ask questions.

February 15, 2021

  • The Grace Presbyterian Session met on February 15 on Zoom for its stated meeting.
  • The meeting was opened and closed with prayer.
  • Steve Hooper was elected to serve a one-year term as clerk.
  • After discussion the session voted to remain at one Sunday morning worship service at 10 am through March 21 and to begin two services (9 and 11) on March 28/Palm Sunday.
  • It was decided to keep the same safety protocols in place, including keeping the windows open. Worship size is still limited to 50 and groups that meet in the building are limited to 30.
  • The session discussed the need to reach out to members who we haven’t had contact with. We do not know if they have drifted, are frustrated, or will return.
  • An update on Deep Roots was given.
  • The Session approved a new team that works with the county and city to help people with small home/yard projects to keep them out of code violations. Bruce Gealy and Bill Vavra lead this team.
  • The Session approved Grace applying for ReKindle grant through Columbia Theological Seminary. We will focus our grant on reading and connecting with schools in the neighborhood and Watermark Books.
  • Financial reports were given and received. Reports were given.

  • Worship services at 9 am and 11 am
  • Stations of the Cross from 2-4 pm at the Spiritual Life Center

April 1: Maundy Thursday worship at 7 pm at Grace

 

April 2: Good Friday worship at noon at Grace

Grace Presbyterian Art Show

 Calling all artists! Grace is holding an art show.  The art is on display in the church from April 11 – May 2.  On the afternoon of Sunday, April 11, there is an open house for the art show.

Art must be brought to the church March 29 – April 1.  If you bring art, please have it ready to show, and include your contact information as well as the title of the piece.  Let us know if your piece needs to be locked or can be left out on display.

Jacob’s Learning Ladder February 2021

Jacob’s Learning Ladder Staff was sent home with a COVID care package for Christmas Break. The Kansas Leadership Center gave out grants to groups of Kansans who came up with a project in order to “Beat the Virus”. A few JLL teachers and office staff met with a KLC coordinator and came up with the care package project. JLL was awarded the full $3,000 grant which allowed us to send teachers home with gift cards, supplies, and activities encouraging them to stay home and stay safe over break.

Cold temperatures outside means more inside activities, Pre-K children have learned how Polar Bears keep warm-they have a layer of blubber under their fur. The children experienced this by putting one hand in ice water and the other in a baggie layered with Crisco. The reactions were priceless! Another experiment children conducted was, “What happens to ice when it sits at room temperature?”—It melts!

JLL Children celebrated Kansas’ 160th Birthday by wearing their favorite Kansas team t-shirt to school and going on parade around the school. Other activities included making corn husk dolls like the Kansa Indians made, and playing traditional Kansa Indian hoop games.
