Mission Trip 2023 Car Wash Fundraiser

Our annual Mission Trip fundraising Car Wash is Sunday, June 4, from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm at Grace.  If you wish to support our mission trip through a donation, just park where you would normally park, then drop your car keys off at the car wash table by the coffee bar. We will get your car, wash it, and re-park it where it was so that it is ready for you after you leave worship or Sunday school.

All funds go to help cover expenses for this year’s IGNITE Mission trip to Chicago, Illinois.  We can accept cash, check, or credit cards.

This year we partner with Experience Mission and Sunshine Gospel Ministries (through the BridgeBuilders program) for an experiential service-learning opportunity. This trip seeks to connect people from different backgrounds to promote a shared understanding of the challenges facing inner-city communities. We learn through practical service opportunities, engage in conversations surrounding poverty, and participate in activities like a poverty simulation.

This trip moves us towards a deeper understanding of poverty and brings an awareness of the issues surrounding those living in the inner city. We can then use this understanding in dealing with Wichita’s own inner-city challenges.

Many of us on the outside hear and see mostly negative portrayals of the inner city, especially Chicago, which contribute to unhelpful labeling and misguided interactions. Experience Mission and Sunshine Gospel Ministries hope to reveal the giftedness of the community through healthy, meaningful experiences that combine service, learning, and active engagement.

Confirmation Journey

Confirmation Journey 2022-2023

We are halfway through our current Grace Confirmation class. Since late October, six confirmands have had weekly discussion topics that have provided great conversation and questions. Topics included trust in God, who is Jesus, discipleship, prayer and its importance, grace and sin, the history of the church and Grace Presbyterian, what is Presbyterianism and the PCUSA, worship, and the sacraments. The confirmands served with First Presbyterian and their homeless breakfast and spent time reading the book of Matthew.  They also were privileged to worship with Congregation Emanu-El at their Shabbat service and learn from Rabbi Michael Davis.

Now that we are in the new year, we participate in worship with St. George Orthodox Christian Cathedral, and possibly visit another church.  We look at what it means to view the world through the verses of Matthew 25, how the confirmands can be change in the world, deal with the life, death, and resurrection of Christ, and what it means to them. Also, we learn where the Holy Spirit and the confirmands’ spiritual gifts are needed. They study the Apostles’ Creed, consider how they imagine God, and put down their faith in a faith statement.  From there, they get the opportunity to make their decision to join the church.  If they answer yes, the confirmands meet with the Session and, on March 26, confess their faith to God and join the church.

It has been a great journey for all of us involved in this class of amazing young adults.  Please pray for them and for God to be present in their lives every day.   – Kirk Anderson
