We are excited to welcome Dr. Matthew Umbarger back to Grace in June. Dr. Umbarger is a professor at Newman University and teaches an adult Sunday School class here at 10 am on Sundays in June. The class meets in the Grace Chapel. The topic is “Jesus the Revolutionary.”  This is what Dr. Umbarger says about the class:

In popular Christian thought and art, Jesus’ attributes of meekness and gentleness are often sentimentalized. Worse, Jesus’ Gospel has been often co-opted into the worldly, ideological stratagems of party politics. We have tamed Jesus, and transformed His Gospel into a tonic to comfort ourselves and a weapon to afflict our enemies. But Jesus didn’t come to make us feel good about ourselves and wage our personal battles. He came to turn the world system that we are so familiar and comfortable with on its head. In this series, we will look at the political and religious message that is Jesus’ Gospel of the Kingdom.

Make a Joyful Noise VBS!  Join us at Grace June 18-22 (9 to noon, Mon-Fri) for Vacation Bible School. This year features a special musical program written just for kids pre-K through sixth grade. Call the church or register online.

The VBS kids offer a special musical performance at 11 am Friday, with seating starting at 10:40 am. Snacks are served everyday and children are exposed to a variety of different musical instruments as they learn all about the life and ministry of the great biblical musician, King David.  You won’t want to miss this exciting opportunity.  Kids first grade and older learn how to play the mountain dulcimer and even perform a song for parents and friends on Friday before VBS closing. If you would like to be involved as a volunteer please contact Jennifer Snook at jennifer@mygpc.org.

Summer Camp Season is here!  Children and youth from our congregation attend camp at Westminster Woods in June. Some of you in the congregation know a lot about Westminster Woods, and some of you know very little. We thought it would be fun to take a trip to camp, see what’s happening, learn a little, enjoy lunch with campers, and revel in the fresh air.

We head to camp on June 6 at 8:30 am, and you are invited to join us. We return to Grace by mid afternoon. If you’re interested, contact Catherine Neelly Burton (Catherine@mygpc.org) or Kirk Anderson (Kirk@mygpc.org).  We need a headcount by Sunday, June 3, for transportation and food purposes.

Join us for lunch in the Great Room on Sunday, May 20, following the 11 am worship service. Over lunch we celebrate Donna Hetrick’s ministry with and among us.

Donna and Bill move to Kansas City this summer.  May 20 is not Donna’s last day with us, but it’s the last Sunday before Memorial Day Weekend when people begin to scatter.

Lunch is $8.50 for adults, $3 for children under 12, and free for children under 3. There is a family max of $23.

Every two seconds someone in the United States needs a blood transfusion. One blood donation may save as many as three lives.

Save a life on June 3 by giving blood at Grace during our Red Cross blood drive. We need 17 donors, and you could be one! Sign up by contacting Catherine Neelly Burton: catherine@mygpc.org, or by going to the Red Cross online and finding our drive. Sign up on Sundays by the coffee bar starting on May 20.
